ACCELERATED READERBook with muscle.jpg

Accelerated reader is a computer program that assesses the student’s comprehension of a novel they have read.  Books are rated according to reading level and difficulty.  The greater the reading level and difficulty, the higher the points.  After a student reads a book, they then take a multiple-choice test on the computer.  They are given points based on how many questions they answer correctly.  The questions are straightforward and fairly general.  There have been very few problems with this program when a student has read the book.  There are some problems, however, if a student only skims the story, watches the movie or picks a book that is higher than their reading level.

Every student in 8th grade at Dakota Valley needs to have 25 accelerated reader points by the end of the nine weeks.  This counts as 25% of their overall reading grade.  If the student completes the required 25 points on accelerated reader, it will bring up their overall percentages.

Mrs. Wendling's AR TIPS

  • Read a book at your level!
  • Don’t grab a book just because of how many AR points it is worth.
  • Read every night or every other night.  Set a time to do this.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute.  Pace yourself.
  • Skimming the book will lead to failing tests.
  • Read often without rushing through the book.
    • If you take too long – you are more likely to forget what you read.
  • Don’t change a book you have already started, try to stick with it.
  • Get recommendations from friends.
  • Don’t judge a book by its cover.
  • Ask yourself questions as you go.  Skim previous chapters to refresh your memory if it has been a long time.
  • Set a reading goal, and STICK TO IT!
Everyone needs to know how to read, and read well.  ANY occupation needs a good reader.

Just because you can read out loud well, does not mean you are a good reader.  You need to understand what you read.
     (Comprehension skills tests).
